Patates me kima

Sometimes recipes are considered to be so personal, we feel like we’re getting a private glimpse in the past when our grandmother’s used to cook into the kitchen. Patates me kima [patátes me kimá] (potatoes with minced meat) is a retro recipe and offers a way to turn leftovers into something appetizing.

Servings: 4

You need:

  • 2 tomatoes patates me kima
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • 3 whole allspice berries
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 300g minced meat (ground pork or beef)
  • 4 Naxian potatoes*, large, peeled and cut into 2cm-thick slices (0.80inch) or cut in quarters.


Use any leftover minced meat or follow the steps below: 

Thinly slice the tomatoes on the wide side of a box grater (large-hole shredder); set aside.

Saute the onions, cloves, cinnamon, allspice berries and cayenne pepper in olive oil until soft and starting to color.

Add the mince meat and cook about 10 minutes, stirring frequently and breaking up any large lumps.

Then add the tomatoes and arrange the potatoes around the pot; season with salt, to taste. Pure water to cover the ingredients.

Cook at a steady boil until the potatoes are cooked through and the sauce thickens, about 20 minutes.

This recipe was actually created  from leftover minced meat sauce that topped a spaghetti dish we cooked the previous day.

* Naxos island is one of the fundamental cultivation of a special variety of potatoes and therefore has an important agricultural production among the other Cycladic islands. The excellent quality of these potatoes is the result of Naxos’ fertile land, which ensures small and firm products.
